When
Kevin Moll and Henry Rowe started Kevin Henry
Estate Agents in 1988, Saffron Walden was going through some major changes.
The
effects of the M11 motorway link to Stumps Cross,
opened nearly 10 years' earlier, were properly
being felt and the phrase 'M11 corridor' had entered
the vocabulary; construction of the new terminal
at Stansted airport had just been started to cope
with a projected 20 million plus passengers a
year; and the Cambridge Phenomenon was getting
into its stride with the design and construction
of science parks around the city just 15 miles
north of the town.
The
busy town centre had a mix of national and local
shops, though a popular criticism at the time
was that it was: 'all antique shops and estate
agents'. The high street invasion of the big brands
may be on the minds of townspeople at the moment,
but for those with memories long enough, they
will recall that around that time national chains
like Budgens, Co-Op, Sketchley, Hepworths and
Rumbellows filled the prime spots, much like recent
arrivals Starbucks, Costa, and Carphone Warehouse
do today.
Saffron
Walden had become the focus of many property guides
and surveys (television hadn't realised the potential
of property shows, at that time) and demand for
property from buyers within the town and beyond
was strong during the 1980s.
It was against this backdrop that Kevin and Henry,
both employed as branch managers by the Watsons/GA
estate agency group, joined forces and started
Kevin Henry Estate Agents.
Changing
times
Estate agents had enjoyed a rapidly rising housing
market during the eighties and the opportunity
for the city to bring together property sales
and financial services was too good to miss. Insurance
companies were pouring money into creating large
national estate agency chains. The old guard were
selling out and their shiny new replacements,
shipped in from places far a field, were still
finding their feet. The industry locally,
at least was in turmoil: enter Kevin Henry,
a dynamic new company with an industry beating
secret weapon a service guarantee.
Drawn
up well ahead of launch, and still in place today,
the guarantee provided Kevin Henry customers with
a clear statement of what they could expect in
terms of service, presentation and marketing.
No other agent practicing in the town at that
time and there were over 13
of them! could match the Kevin Henry Guarantee
and the agency was an immediate success, repaying
start-up loans within just 6 months of opening.
The
sales success continues to this day, and Kevin
Henry's impressive claim to fame is that during
every one of the 20 years that they have been
open, they have sold more properties than any
other agent in the area. Proof enough that the
Kevin Henry Guarantee is as effective today as
it was 20 years' ago.
